Complaints about payment issues began to surface on social media Tuesday afternoon.
“All the card machines have died,” fumed a member of the warehouse retailer in a Reddit thread.
They took a photo of lines backed up down the aisle, which appeared to be full of customers who wanted to pay with credit or debit cards.
“Sounds like it’s affecting stores across North America,” another shopper commented on the thread.
The United States Sun has reached out to Costco for comment.
If this statement is correct, it would imply that Costco’s over 600 stores in the United States and Puerto Rico, as well as its 109 locations in Canada, were affected.
“S**t is down up in WA too,” cried a third customer.
“Also down in the Kansas City area,” someone else mentioned.
A customer also claimed that the technical difficulties had occurred a few weeks earlier for several businesses, and that Costco was experiencing a similar issue.
NOT AGAIN
Costco recently confirmed that it will close its stores for 24 hours again, just weeks after leaving some customers stranded.
The warehouse retailer closed on Easter to commemorate the Christian holiday.
Customers were forced to get their groceries elsewhere, and they will have to do so again on Memorial Day.
Memorial Day, which honours military veterans who died while serving their country, is observed in the United States on the last Monday in May.
This year’s date is May 26, but there are other options for shoppers who will be unable to get their Costco purchases.
Those who prefer to shop at a warehouse retailer can visit Sam’s Club, which is open on Memorial Day, according to its website.
Locations will be open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. for Plus members and 10 a.m. to 6 p.
That means it will close at least two hours earlier than usual.
Stores without subscription-based operations, such as Walmart, will be open on Memorial Day.
FAMILY FIRST
Natural Grocers, like Costco, will be closing on May 26.
Natural Grocers is well-known for its natural produce and operates 162 stores across 20 states.
In honour of Memorial Day and its company ethos, it is providing employees with a paid day off.
“We live and breathe family,” Natural Grocers said in a statement.
“At the end of the day, it’s the people we love that make it all worthwhile.”
“We also think it’s the best thing about the holidays — they’re a chance to spend time with loved ones,” she said.
Costco also received attention earlier in April for a $20 pair of pants that looked almost identical to a Lululemon favourite.
This month, the warehouse retailer reduced prices on some items, including a garden gadget for less than $10.
