Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, who was elected on Monday to succeed outgoing Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, has warned that President Trump is “trying to break us.”
In remarks celebrating his victory for a full term, Carney claimed Trump has “fundamentally changed” the world in recent months, citing broad tariffs and his suggestion for Canada to unite with the United States.
“As I have been warning for months, America wants our land, our resources, our water, and our country,” Carney said during his victory speech late Monday in Ottawa. “These are not idle threats. President Trump is attempting to break us so that America can control us. “That will never, ever happen.”
“But we also must recognize the reality that our world has fundamentally changed,” he told reporters.
While Carney won another term for the Liberal Party, it is still unclear whether his party would keep the majority in Parliament (172 seats).
Pierre Poilievre, leader of the Conservative Party, admitted defeat in a speech. While his party failed to win a majority, he promised to hold the Liberal Party accountable.
Poilievre, who appeared to have a chance of winning the late April election due to Canadians’ discontent with immigration and inflation, is now expected to lose his seat in the assembly, according to the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.
Carney, a former central banker, became the party’s leader in March, following Trudeau’s resignation ahead of Trump’s return to the White House. He has since responded to the president’s criticism of Canada, including the placement of a 25% tax on imports not covered by the US-Mexico-Canada pact, by declaring that Ottawa will not back down and that the country will forge its own course in the new political climate.
“Let us put an end to the division and anger of the past,” Carney said in his speech on Monday. “We are all Canadian, and my government will work for and with everyone.”
“No matter where you live, no matter what language you speak, no matter how you voted, I will always do my best to represent everyone who calls Canada home,” the politician said.
