RONCEVERTE – A Greenbrier County man was arrested on Monday night for allegedly attacking his ex-girlfriend, threatening her life, and damaging her phone with a baseball bat in the parking lot behind Kroger in the Red Oaks Shopping Center.
Greenbrier County Sheriff’s deputies arrested Samuel Mayo late Monday during a domestic violence episode that began with threatening messages and escalated to physical violence, according to a criminal complaint.
Deputies were rushed to the Wendy’s restaurant in Fairlea about 10:28 p.m. after the claimed victim dialed 911. The victim, who works at Wendy’s, returned to the restaurant after alleging Mayo raped her behind a nearby Kroger shop.
When deputies arrived on the scene, the victim was extremely upset and crying. She told deputies that she and Mayo had broken up over the weekend, but Mayo continued to contact her through her social media accounts.
She claimed he was enraged about the persons she had been messaging and began sending her threatening texts, including a photo of a baseball bat and the admonition, “U better make this right.”
Throughout the day, Mayo allegedly sent a series of increasingly hostile messages, informing the victim that she would “make things right” or he would “go crazy.”
He wrote as well: “U got consequences if you want to keep going this route” with “dw abt where I am at — all that matters is I know where u r.” The woman claimed she was afraid to leave work because of his threats and reported seeing Mayo parked outside the Ollie’s store across from Wendy’s.
As she attempted to exit the shopping complex by driving around the back of Kroger, Mayo allegedly halted her vehicle, approached it with a baseball bat, and demanded she get into his truck. The victim cooperated out of fear for her own safety.
The woman claimed that while inside Mayo’s truck, he struck her in the back of the head several times while cursing at her. She claimed that the beating ended only when she asked him to stop.
Mayo then exited the truck, took her phone, and repeatedly crushed it on the pavement with the bat, according to the lawsuit. He allegedly grabbed the phone, struck it again, then threw the victim’s keys into a nearby tree, where a Wendy’s employee discovered them.
The woman managed to flee and return to Wendy’s, where she called for assistance. She told deputies that she assumed Mayo had gone to his father’s home near Lewisburg.
Fairlea EMS workers evaluated the victim on the scene. Authorities explained her rights about a domestic violence protection order, which she stated she intended to seek the following day.
Deputies found Mayo at the house later that night. When questioned why cops were at his house, Mayo reportedly said, “I know I should not have done it,” and revealed that he had damaged the victim’s phone with a baseball bat, which deputies later discovered in his truck. He further alleged that he did not remove the text conversations exchanged between himself and the victim.
After studying the communications and Mayo’s account, deputies arrested him. He was taken to Southern Regional Jail to await arraignment.
Mayo is facing accusations for domestic assault, property destruction, and terroristic threats. As of Tuesday afternoon, no court date had been scheduled.
The Greenbrier County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the situation.
