Residents Convene for a May Day Rally in Lewisburg

LEWISBURG – More than 100 people gathered in downtown Lewisburg Thursday afternoon for a “Hands Off!” rally, one of several nationwide protests against the Trump administration’s proposed federal budget cuts.

Local activists and Democratic leaders organized the event, which took place in the town’s Greenspace park, to express their concerns about the potential impact of federal spending cuts on West Virginia’s healthcare, education, and social services.

Participants held signs saying “Save Our Schools” and “Healthcare Is a Right,” and chanted slogans urging lawmakers to reject the proposed budget. The rally was one of several held throughout the state as part of the larger “50501 Movement,” which organized more than 1,200 protests across the country.

Despite the rain, the mood remained positive, with attendees sharing personal stories about how federal programs have improved their lives.

The rally ended with a call to action, encouraging attendees to contact their elected officials and ask them to oppose the proposed budget cuts. Organizers emphasized the significance of civic engagement in shaping community-wide policies.

While the national debate over federal spending continues, local events such as Thursday’s rally highlight West Virginians’ ongoing concerns about the potential impact of federal policies on their daily lives.
