An Indiana man was arrested weeks after he and his father were accused of shooting another man over a financial dispute.

Indianapolis Metropolitan Police charged Donnie Abney III, 22, with murder in connection with the April 17 shooting death of Forrest Tab Grant, 62.

According to court records obtained by local Fox affiliate WXIN, Donnie Abney III, also known as “Little Donnie,” was involved in an altercation with Grant along with his father, Donnie Abney Jr., also known as “Big Donnie,” that resulted in Grant being shot in the back, allegedly by “Little Donnie.”

According to court documents, police interviewed nine witnesses who identified “Little Donnie” as the alleged gunman after observing the two older men arguing at a bus stop. “Little Donnie,” as he was also referred to in court documents, then entered the conversation and took his father’s side in the argument.

During the verbal altercation, “Little Donnie” allegedly pulled a gun on Grant but did not fire. When Grant turned his back on the father-son duo and walked away, “Little Donnie” allegedly shot him in the back.

Both Abney men then fled the scene. Grant was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead.

According to witnesses in court documents, Grant and “Little Donnie” had another argument the day before the alleged shooting at a nearby Family Dollar store. “Little Donnie” allegedly held his gun on Grant without firing during the confrontation as well.

The day after the alleged shooting, a family member told police that “Little Donnie” called her on Facebook Messenger and said, “Don’t worry, I didn’t mean to.” He was going to pull out his gun first. I’m a hothead, so I shot him.”

Police said he told another family member, “Well, you’re not going to see me for a long time.” I got into a fight with this guy, he had a gun, and I had a gun. He pulled out his gun, and I pulled out mine and shot him. Unfortunately, he did not make it.

According to witnesses, Grant was carrying a stick during his argument with the Abney men.

In a Facebook post announcing Donnie Abney III’s arrest, police stated that the suspect attempted to flee when officers tracked him down two weeks after the shooting. He was eventually taken into custody and booked into Marion County Jail. Indianapolis Metropolitan Police said the Marion County prosecutor’s office will decide whether or not to charge Donnie Abney Jr. with murder.
